Unlocking Creative Potential

WORKSHOP

SCREENWRITING

This workshop teaches the art and craft behind the screenplay focusing on classic and contemporary work. Students will learn how to structure a screenplay, develop the inciting incident and related beats, screen dialogue and how to create character, specifically the idea of the broken protagonist.

Looking at work such as The Verdict (David Mamet), Taxi Driver (Paul Schrader), American Beauty (Alan Ball), Network (Paddy Chayefsky), The Social Network (Aaron Sorkin), Juno (Diablo Cody). TV Pilots such as Mad Men (Matthew Weiner), Breaking Bad (Vince Gilligan).

SCREENWRITING + DIRECTING

After students understand the fundamental structure and thematic throughline of a script,  the workshop moves it’s attention towards direction of the work. As a director, Mick focuses on each element of both the pre-production and production process including casting, rehearsals, blocking, camera set ups and framing, and breaks down the day to day process of the shooting schedule.

WRITERS WORKSHOP

This ongoing Monday Night Workshop focuses on teaching craft and technique. Students sharpen narrative tools and ask the big questions: why this story? why now? how do I tell it? what is the philosophical statement? Through ‘in-class’ method-based exercises, students engage in ‘stream of consciousness’ writing and explore the core thematic elements of their story. This class is about tools, not rules. Creativity must always come before craft. Students learn to get messy and permit themselves to fail.

Source material helps writers learn the principals of storytelling for any medium; creative nonfiction, fiction, teleplays, plays, and screenwriting.

“I took Mick’s workshop in 2015 and in 2016 I was making a movie! It’s a great place for writers to meet and play with their ideas and a great way to keep accountable to drafts and moving forward, and Mick is kind and creative himself so understands the process!”
